Starters & Alternators in Sacramento
A car that will not start, or a battery light that came on while you were driving, usually comes down to the starter, the alternator or the battery. All three get tested before anything gets replaced.
Replacing the wrong one is the classic no-start mistake. A weak battery is hard on starters and alternators, a failing alternator ruins batteries, and a corroded cable or a bad ground looks exactly like all of them. I test the battery, the charging output, the voltage drop across the cables and the current the starter draws, so the part that gets replaced is the part that actually failed.
Starter and alternator replacement is normal driveway work on most vehicles. Some engines bury the starter under the intake or behind the exhaust, which adds time. Tell me the year, make, model and engine when you call and I will tell you up front if yours is one of those.
If a worn belt, tensioner or pulley is what took the alternator out, that gets sorted in the same visit. There is no sense bolting a new alternator to a belt that is about to shred.

Is it the starter, the alternator or the battery?
Testing tells you, and guessing is expensive. If it cranks slowly or clicks once, the battery and starter are the suspects. If it runs after a jump and dies later, or the battery light is on, the charging system is. I test all three before replacing anything.
Can you come if it will not start at all?
Yes. The vehicle does not need to move. That is the whole point of a mobile mechanic.
Do you bring the part?
Yes, once we know which part it is. Tell me the year, make, model and engine when you book and I will have the right starter or alternator with me.
My car starts on a jump and then dies — what is that?
Usually the charging system. If the alternator is not putting out, the engine runs off the battery until it is flat. Do not keep jumping it, because that is hard on the new battery and on the starter.
