Rack and Pinion Replacement in Sacramento
The steering rack is what turns your steering wheel into the front wheels turning. When it leaks or wears out, steering gets heavy, loose or noisy — not something to leave for later. (Not to be confused with ring and pinion, which is the gear set inside a differential.)

I replace steering racks on cars, trucks and SUVs with rack-and-pinion steering. The tie rod ends are inspected at the same time, and hydraulic systems are refilled and bled so no air is left in them.
Replacing a rack changes the toe setting, so the vehicle needs a wheel alignment afterwards. I set it close enough to drive safely and will tell you to get a proper alignment soon after — that protects your tires.
A power steering leak is not always the rack. Hoses, the pump and the reservoir can leak too, so I find the source before quoting a rack.
What the job includes
- Steering rack replacement
- Tie rod end inspection
- Power steering fluid refill and bleed
- Leak check of hoses and pump
- Steering wheel centered before the test drive
Rack and Pinion Replacement questions
Do I need an alignment afterwards?
Yes. Replacing the rack changes the toe, and driving on it out of alignment wears tires quickly.
Is this the same as ring and pinion?
No. Rack and pinion is steering. Ring and pinion is the gear set inside the differential — I do both, and each has its own page.
Can I just keep topping up the power steering fluid?
For a short while, but a leaking rack usually gets worse, and running the system low can damage the pump.
