Lockers & Differential Rebuilds in Sacramento
A differential either gets ignored until it fails or gets looked after cheaply. Gear oil is the cheapest insurance on a 4x4 — and a locker is the single biggest traction upgrade you can make to a vehicle that actually leaves the pavement.

I install selectable and automatic lockers, limited-slip carriers and spools, and rebuild differentials that are worn or have been run low on oil. A carrier swap is a full setup job — a new carrier means new carrier bearings, backlash reset and the pattern verified, exactly as with a gear change.
Rebuilds cover worn carrier and pinion bearings, chipped or spalled gear teeth, leaking pinion and axle seals, and the aftermath of water intrusion. If you have been through deep water and the gear oil looks like coffee with milk, the diff has taken on water and the bearings are already rusting. That is a same-week job, not a someday job.
If your vehicle is simply due for service, a gear oil change with the cover off lets me inspect the ring gear and the magnet for debris. It is a cheap visit that regularly catches a failure while it is still a bearing and not yet a whole axle.
What the job includes
- Selectable, automatic and limited-slip locker installation
- Carrier and spool swaps with full setup and pattern check
- Differential rebuilds — carrier bearings, pinion bearings, seals
- Pinion seal and axle seal replacement
- Diff cover removal, inspection and gear oil service
- Water-intrusion cleanup after deep water crossings

Lockers & Differential Rebuilds questions
Which locker should I get?
It depends on whether the vehicle is a daily driver. A selectable locker (air or electric) stays open on the street and locks only when you want it, which is the best all-round choice for something you drive to work. An automatic locker costs less and always works, but it changes street manners, especially in the front axle. Tell me how the vehicle gets used.
Front or rear locker first?
Rear, almost always. A rear locker gives you most of the traction benefit with no effect on steering. A front locker is the one that makes a vehicle hard to steer when engaged.
How often should gear oil be changed?
Roughly every 30,000 miles under normal use, and immediately after any water crossing deep enough to submerge the axle. If you tow or wheel regularly, closer to every 15,000.
Can you rebuild my diff or does it need replacing?
Most can be rebuilt. If the ring and pinion teeth are chipped or spalled the gear set is scrap, but the housing and axle are usually fine — that becomes a gear install rather than a rebuild. I will pull the cover and show you what I find before you commit to parts.
